Listen to the Trees
An artistic collaboration with Maria Moorhouse situated at The Devon Sculpture Park
Notes on an environmental art projectI feel art is vitally important in shaping attitudes towards environmental awareness.Often art is purely a visual language which engages the viewer to observe and consider what is in front of them. This requires an interaction and interpretation, in doing so it prods the onlooker to think about the issues raised regarding the subject at hand. Environmental issues can be expressed in various ways through visual metaphors and symbolsto clearly communicate the information without words, the impact of which can make a lasting impression. It is the hope that this kind of communication really engages the viewers awareness on a deeper subconcious level as well as on an intellectual level. The discerning thoughts are their own, the interaction is personal and this kind of powerful communication is a perfect medium for environmental issues. When viewing this artwork I would like people to consider our place on this planet.Could our relationship with nature be more thoughtful? Even symbiotic? Do we understand the web of connections here?DSP is at the forefront of Devon and the Southwest of places which are combating the environmental crisis, discovering new and old techniques and strategies to take us forward at this time of urgency. Looking to rediscover what is gone, and to educate us back on to a path of balance and longevity for us and the planet. DSP is naturally a place for exploring that interaction, and provoking our thoughts on this through Art."The interconnectedness of being is who we are" Paul StametsFor myself, my art has always been about the connection with something greater than ourselves, this is where i believe our purpose lies. Perhaps as guardians of this astonishingly complex and beautiful planet we can truly experience and honour the immense creativity of nature.
